Types of Musical Instruments
Today, instruments are grouped into families. Some common instrument families are:
Percussion instruments are those that make a sound when they are hit or shaken. The percussion family includes drums, bongos, maracas, triangles, and xylophones. Because of their simplicity, percussion instruments are likely the oldest. Drums dating as far back as 5000 BC have been discovered. Rocks and animal bones were likely used as early percussion instruments.
Woodwind instruments are those that make a sound when a musician blows air into or on them. The air is directed into the instrument with a reed. They get their name because early instruments were often made of wood - or bone - and their sound is made by wind. Woodwind instruments include the flute, clarinet, saxophone, and oboe.
Brass instruments are those whose sound is made when a musician blows air and his lips vibrate on the mouthpiece. Although some of them are made of wood, most are made of brass, which is how they got their name. Brass instruments include the trumpet, tuba, and French horn.

String instruments are those whose sound is made by plucking or strumming a string. Like percussion and woodwind instruments, string instruments have been around for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians were known the play the harp. String instruments include guitars, violins, and cellos.
Keyboard instruments are those that make a sound when a musician presses a key. Common string instruments include organs, pianos, and accordions.
When a group of instruments from each family (except the keyboard family) are played together, it's called an orchestra. An orchestra is led by a conductor.
Music instruction is an important part of any child's education because it improves language development and reasoning. Studies have shown that music improves students' understanding of both academic and non-academic subjects.
